The Severe Asthma Clinic at Manning Family Children’s is a multidisciplinary
clinic specializing in the evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment of children
and adolescents with severe or difficult-to-treat asthma. The Severe Asthma
Clinic team includes providers, respiratory therapists, and nurses from
the Allergy and Immunology and Pulmonology Divisions who collaboratively
evaluate the patient’s needs and make recommendations for care.
What Is Severe Asthma?
Children and adolescents are considered to experience severe asthma if
they require one of the following treatments:
High-dose inhaled corticosteroid plus a second controller such as a long-acting
beta agonist or leukotriene inhibitor
Systemic corticosteroids for more than 50% of the year
Biologic therapy for asthma
And the child or adolescent’s asthma remains uncontrolled as defined
by one of the following criteria:
Two or more exacerbations requiring systemic corticosteroids in the previous year
Serious exacerbation(s) (≥1 hospitalization, intensive care unit stay,
or episode requiring mechanical ventilation in the past year)
