Tulane Weight Loss Center

The Manning Family Children’s Tulane Weight Loss Center offers a comprehensive, team-based bariatric surgery and medical weight loss program for children and adolescents. Our team guides patients and families through every step of the journey from initial evaluation and medical/nutrition clearance through surgery and long-term follow-up care. We combine surgical expertise with pediatric-focused nutrition education, psychological support, and ongoing follow-up to help young patients achieve lasting, healthy weight loss.

Who qualifies for a referral?

  • Adolescent patients with one of the following qualifying BMI conditions:
    • BMI ≥ 120% of the 95th percentile for age or BMI ≥ 35kg/m2 whichever is lower, with obesity related health conditions (see list below)
    • BMI ≥ 140% of the 95th percentile of BMI for age or BMI ≥ 40 kg/m2, whichever is lower.

Obesity related health conditions include but are not limited to the following:

  • Type 2 diabetes
  • Idiopathic intracranial hypertension
  • Fatty liver disease
  • Gastroesophageal reflux disease
  • Obstructive sleep apnea (Apnea-Hypopnea Index > 5)
  • Joint or mobility symptoms
  • Cardiovascular disease risks including hypertension, hyperlipidemia, insulin resistance)
  • Weight related depression

    • Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy (gastric sleeve)
    • Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass (gastric bypass)
    • Hiatal hernia repair (when appropriate)
  • Medical weight loss / obesity medicine

  • Nutrition education and dietitian visits
  • Psychological evaluation and support
  • Insurance verification and coordination (Note: LA Medicaid will usually approve the surgery. Other insurances are subject to approval).
