The Manning Family Children’s Ketogenic Diet Clinic provides a comprehensive, team-based approach to dietary therapy. Multidisciplinary expertise is provided by a board-certified epileptologist and a dedicated ketogenic dietitian who evaluate each patient to see if he or she is a candidate for dietary therapy. Once an individualized dietary plan is created for the patient, a family-centered approach with education and support is provided to help families start and maintain this diet as a treatment for epilepsy. The team offers ongoing monitoring and dietary adjustments to ensure safety, effectiveness, and nutritional balance while collaborating with the referring pediatric neurologist.
The ketogenic diet is a high-fat, low-carbohydrate, moderate-protein diet that shifts the body into a state of ketosis, where it burns fat instead of carbohydrates for energy. This metabolic change can help reduce seizures in some individuals with epilepsy.
The Modified Atkins Diet (MAD) is a high-fat, low-carbohydrate, moderate-protein diet used to treat epilepsy, particularly in cases where traditional ketogenic diets are not suitable. It’s a less restrictive version of the classic ketogenic diet, allowing for more flexibility in food choices and meal planning.
Low Glycemic Index Treatment (LGIT) is a dietary therapy used to manage epilepsy, especially in cases where the ketogenic diet is not tolerated or is too restrictive.
The Ketogenic Diet Clinic is appropriate for the following patients:
• Children with epilepsy who may benefit from dietary therapy
• Patients with medication-resistant (refractory) epilepsy
• Families interested in non-pharmacologic treatment options
• Children whose neurologist supports a referral for dietary therapy
To refer a patient, please call or fax the patient’s information to the numbers on the front of this card and the Neurology Department will schedule the appointment. Patients must be referred to the Ketogenic Diet Clinic by a primary neurologist who will continue to provide routine epilepsy care. The clinic is held at the main campus on the 3rd Wednesday of each month.
